She easily navigates the beauty spectrum — from being a red carpet stunner to rocking a fresh-faced weekend casual look — Hewitt knows how to make herself look beautiful for every occasion. We talked to the multitalented self-starter about how she got her start in her career, the staples in her beauty arsenal and what’s next for her career in 2014.
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN TV HOSTING?
MARIANNA HEWITT: I went to college for broadcast journalism. After graduation, I moved to Los Angeles and took hosting classes with Marki Costello and built up my reel. Then I just had to work hard, use social media and take any job I could get, and one thing led to another.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KEY CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL AT YOUR JOB?
HEWITT: Being nice I think is number one. It never hurts to be kind to people and others will remember that. Other than that, being outgoing is really important, never be shy and try to think on your feet! Interviews can be awkward if you can’t bounce back from questions that elicit a mediocre response.
WHAT IS YOUR ON CAMERA LOOK AND HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CREATE IT?
HEWITT: If it’s an important event, I work with a hair and makeup team and that can take around an hour and a half. On my own, I spend about an hour to get ready on camera. The most important element is powder so I’m not shiny, lashes to make my eyes pop, and lip color.
YOU HAVE AN INTERESTING STORY WHT TRYING LA MER — CAN YOU TELL US WHEN YOU FIRST USED THE PRODUCT AND WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF IT?
HEWITT: I always read about celebrities who raved about La Mer face cream. It was so expensive but I thought that meant, it worked! So I saved up my money, got this “miracle” face cream and it turned out to not be anything that special. It was just a really yummy smelling face cream that I was sucked into buying because of celebrities. I never wanted other women to waste their money on something that didn’t have a real review to it based on someone just buying as a consumer and using it. So that played into naming my first blog, I want to really share with girls what things are, because money doesn’t grow on trees! Also mer is my nick name, and my friends and I call Los Angeles “la la” so it played into that as well.
WHAT ARE THE STAPLES IN YOUR BEAUTY ARSENAL?
HEWITT: I cannot live without my beauty blender. It is my favorite thing in the world and I have no idea how I would put on foundation or concaler without it! Also my favorite concealer of the moment is Kevin Aucoin.
DO YOU ADJUST YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE WHEN YOUR TRAVEL?
HEWITT: I only take a few products with me when I travel. I keep it to a minimum — concealer, BB cream, blush, eyebrows and mascara. I take the blush and use it in my crease. When I’m on vacation I try to let my skin breathe.
